Timing of revenue recognition and expenses

When taking an annual snapshot at the end of a fiscal year, several factors can distort a realistic picture of LightWaterLife Global Relief’s (or any nonprofit organization) financial health and activities. One is the timing of donations being received and the expenditure of those donations, whether in the form of cash or in-kind humanitarian aid supplies.

Donations—including those received to conduct specific activities—are recorded as revenue when they are received or promised, even if the activities are to be conducted in a future year. The in-kind product donations are also recorded in inventory upon receipt. LightWaterLife Global Relief’s policy is to distribute products at the earliest practicable date, consistent with sound programmatic principles. While the distribution often occurs in the same fiscal year of receipt, it may occur in the following fiscal year. An expense is recorded and inventory is reduced when the products are shipped to partners.

Conflict of interests

It is the conflict of interest policy of LightWaterLife Global Relief to assure that any conflicts of interest or potential conflicts of interest are fully disclosed to the Board of Directors before a proposed decision is made or a proposed transaction is completed.  It shall be the continuing responsibility of all Directors, Officers, and employees to review their outside business interests, philanthropic interests, personal interests, family, and other close relationships for actual or potential conflicts of interest with respect to the LightWaterLife Global Relief, and to immediately disclose the nature of the interest or relationship.  The interests of a member of the family of a Director, Officer, or employee shall be attributed to such person.  Any violation of the provisions of this policy shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any transaction entered into by LightWaterLife Global Relief.

The Board of Directors shall review the conflict of interest policy annually and submit a copy of the policy to all Directors, Officers and Board committee members within thirty (30) days of the beginning of each fiscal year or the first committee meeting of such fiscal year for Board committee members.

We respect your privacy

LightWaterLife Global Relief is committed to respecting the privacy of its financial and in-kind donors, whether the donation is made online, by mail, or any other method. When you make a financial or in-kind donation, you provide your name and contact information. Financial donors provide standard payment information including, in many circumstances, credit card data. We protect your information in a variety of ways, as described below.

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information. Many donors use credit cards for donations. We protect the security of credit card transactions using a number of measures such as encryption, access controls, network firewalls, and physical security. These measures make it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept the credit card information you send to us. When we work with other companies to process credit card transactions, those companies also use encryption and other appropriate security measures.

We will not sell, share or trade our donors’ personally identifiable information with any other entity, except as described below. In addition, we will not send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations, unless a donor has given us specific permission to do so. LightWaterLife Global Relief has vendors that assist with processing and managing donations and donor data. We may give these vendors access to donor data. Our vendors are bound by strict confidentiality rules and are permitted to use donor data only to support LightWaterLife Global Relief operations.

Donation policy on designated contributions

Direct Relief has a strict policy to ensure that 100 percent of all designated contributions for specific programs and emergency responses are used only on expenses related to supporting that program or response. This is consistent with the requirement that charitable organizations honor precisely the clear intent of generous donors who responded to these tragedies and to preserve the maximum benefit for the survivors for whose benefit the funds were entrusted to Direct Relief.
